No Rules For SRK: Sonam Kapoor

Sonam Kapoor may be just two films old, but she is choosy about her roles and has drafted strict guidelines for herself to sign movies.

The young actress is, however, willing to make exceptions if the man opposite her happens to be Robert De Niro or Shah Rukh Khan.

“Well, why would one actually ask questions if paired opposite Robert De Niro?” asks Sonam with a mischievous smile. “You should consider yourself plain fortunate to just share a common frame with him. In fact, I will be happy to even walk past a frame featuring him. No questions asked. Period.”

Sonam teamed up with Ranbir Kapoor in her debut vehicle “Saawariya” and she was seen with Abhishek Bachchan in her second film “Dilli 6″. She is now looking forward to a movie with superstar Shah Rukh.

“He is another man for whom I will be so very willing to ignore my rule book. I would be more than happy to go ahead and sign a film if Shah Rukh happens to be my hero,” says Sonam, a self-confessed Shah Rukh fan.

“There are exceptions that one makes about the size and content of the role when it comes to working with legendary actors; De Niro and Shah Rukh just fit the bill,” she said.

However, when it comes to working on films with anyone lesser, Sonam certainly has her do’s and don’ts in place.

“I don’t intend to do films where all I am required to do is to dance in four songs and enact a couple of emotional scenes. By no means am I looking at that kind of cinema,” she said.

Though the formal announcement of her next film is yet to take place, reports are that Sonam’s next will be for her dad’s production house. The film is called “Ayesha” and is based on Jane Austen’s novel “Emma”.

According to industry sources, Sonam will be making a complete about turn from her “Saawariya” and “Delhi 6″ image and take on a completely new ultra-chic avtar. The film will feature Abhay Deol along with newcomer Arunodoy Singh, who will soon make his debut with “Sikandar”.

Sonam and Imran Khan are meanwhile reportedly being considered by Kunal Kohli for his next film that would be directed by his assistant Danish Aslam. However, confirmation is still awaited around this young love story.

Hollywood’s top music composer Jarre dies

LOS ANGELES: Tributes poured in on Monday for Maurice Jarre, the Oscar-winning French composer of music scores for such timeless films as “Doctor Zhivago” and “Lawrence of Arabia”, who died at age 84.

Jarre died in Los Angeles in the early hours on Sunday after suffering from cancer, a spokesman for his son Jean-Michel Jarre told reporters.

Hollywood’s most decorated composer, Jarre had written more than 150 scores for a range of films from thrillers to love stories, working with star directors like John Huston, Alfred Hitchcock and Franco Zeffirelli.

He won his first Oscar for “Lawrence of Arabia” in 1962 and three years later was awarded a second statuette for “Doctor Zhivago”, famous for the tearful balalaika of “Lara’s Theme.” Both films were directed by David Lean.

A third Oscar came in 1984 for best original music score for “A Passage to India”, which he wrote for a full symphonic orchestra and marked yet another collaboration with Lean.

President Nicolas Sarkozy described Jarre as a “great composer” and praised his “majestic and full-bodied works, popular and classical music.”

“By working with some of the greatest filmmakers in the world, he showed that music can be just as important as pictures to make a beautiful and successful film,” said Sarkozy.

Jarre had also written the score for “Witness” from director Peter Weir in 1985 and joined him again in 1989 to compose the music to “Dead Poets Society”.

Other music scores include “Ghost” in 1990 and “I Dreamed of Africa” in 2000.

Other than the three Oscars, Jarre won countless accolades for his scores including Golden Globes and BAFTA British film awards. He also wrote music for theatre and ballet.

“He was a creative, modern musician who showed a perfect mastery of sound. His music provided a counterpoint to the pictures and formed one with the film,” said French Culture Minister Christine Albanel.

“He was Hollywood’s greatest musician,” said French singer Mireille Mathieu.

“His fantastic and timeless scores are in perfect osmosis with the films.”

“He was a great man of music and film, but also a great ambassador for France,” said Mathieu who singled out for praise the score to the 1966 film “Is Paris Burning?” about the French Resistance.

Born in the central city of Lyon, Jarre was studying engineering when he switched to music. He recounted being inspired by the works of conductor Leopold Stokowski.

He studied percussion and joined French composer Pierre Boulez who wrote for a Paris theatre.

In 1952 Jarre wrote his first score for the short film “Hotel des Invalides,” at the request of director Georges Franju.

“In filmmaking, the composer is always the last link,” Jarre told Le Journal du Dimanche daily a few years ago.

“Often you find yourself working with a producer who can’t wait to release his film. So you have to work quickly. For Lawrence of Arabia, I was given six weeks to write two hours of music.”

Jarre moved to the United States in the mid-1960s and briefly settled in Switzerland before returning to Los Angeles.

During his last public appearance in Europe, he was awarded a Golden Bear at the Berlin film festival in recognition of his life’s work.

His son Jean-Michel Jarre rose to prominence as a composer in his own right with the worldwide electronic music sensation “Oxygene” in 1976. He also has a daughter Stephanie and second son Kevin.

Indian actress Shilpa Shetty is reportedly in talks to join the cast of popular UK TV show ‘EastEnders’.?The 33-year-old Bollywood beauty is tipped to play a member of a new Indian family in the soap opera, the Daily Mail said.

t would Shetty’s first major foreign assignment since she became the winner of British reality show ‘Celebrity Big Brother’ in 2007, which also made her one of the most popular faces in the country.

“EastEnders would be the springboard to long-term success in Britain - and that is very much in Shilpa’s sights. She knows all about the show as it is a big hit in her homeland - and of course it is popular with a lot of Indians in the UK,” the newspaper said quoting the People.

Shetty recently bought a seven-bedroom, 5 million??pound house in Weybridge, Surrey in London with boyfriend Raj Kundra.?’EastEnders’ is about the domestic and professional lives of the people living in a fictional borough of Walford in East London.

Shilpa’s inclusion in the show would make her the first Indian family in Walford since the Ferriera family in 2004, who were wrote out after being dubbed as ‘unrealistic’ by viewers.

Madonna in Malawi to adopt

Madonna has arrived in Malawi to begin the process of adopting a second child from the African country. The pop star wants to adopt a young girl called Mercy James, local officials have said.

The singer was seen walking through the village of Chinkhota with her 12-year-old daughter Lourdes. She refused to answer questions from reporters but said it was “amazing” to be back in the country where she adopted David Banda in 2006.?

Madonna is due to sign adoption papers in court in the capital Lilongwe in the coming days.
An unnamed welfare official told the Associated Press (AP) agency Mercy James’ mother was an unmarried 18-year-old who died a few months after the baby was born.?

The girl is in the same orphanage that was home to David, who is now three years old.

There are differing reports of Mercy James’ age, with AP and Reuters saying she is four years old and Agence France Presse (AFP) saying she is three.?

But Madonna has come in for criticism over her plans. David Nutt, spokesman for the Save the Children charity, urged Madonna to think again.? “We don’t want to pick on one individual - any time, any set of circumstances can change,” he said.?

Madonna also has two biological children, Lourdes and Rocco”But the problem is, very often this is the wrong thing to do, and Madonna tends to make it seem like it’s the answer to everything and all problems, and it just isn’t.”?

But Steven Whitehead from the charity Oasis, which represents families who adopt from abroad, said foreign adoption was a good idea in many cases. He said, “There are a number of children for whom inter-country adoption represents their only chance of having a family, and the human convention on the right of the child gives every child the right to a family.?

“And it’s much better for them be in a family, wherever it may happen to be, than be in institutional care. The damaging effect of institutional care on children is so well recognised that, you know, it’s just not an issue of debate.”?

Madonna’s spokeswomen, Liz Rosenberg and Barbara Charone, and her lawyer in Malawi, Alan Chinula, have not commented.?

Writing in response to e-mailed questions from Nation readers last week, Madonna said: “Many people - especially our Malawian friends - say that David should have a Malawian brother or sister.?

“It’s something I have been considering.”

In 2006, critics accused the Malawian government of sidestepping laws banning foreign adoptions in order to allow the celebrity to take David home with her. Madonna’s adoption of David Banda was confirmed last year.??

Role model
?
After the adoption was legalised, Madonna said the difficulties had arisen because “this adoption essentially was the beginning of the creation of adoption laws in Malawi”.?

She hoped it would make it easier for others to adopt from the country and explained: “I am the template or the role model, so to speak, for future adoptions.”? The star also has two biological children - Rocco, her son with former husband Guy Ritchie, and Lourdes, whose father is Carlos Leon.?

Film director Ritchie and Madonna’s divorce was finalised in November.

Malawi does not, as a rule, approve adoptions for single or divorced people, but the official at the country’s welfare department said that each case was considered on merit.? Madonna has also established a charity, Raising Malawi, which aims to provide accommodation, food, education and other support to orphans in the country.

Kangna To Play Madhubala in Once upon a Time.

MUMBAI: Kangna is getting ready for the biggest challenge of her career. She’ll be playing whom she considers the most beautiful woman in the history of Indian cinema.

It’s a thought that flatters and terrifies her. Kangna is afraid she may not look beautiful enough on screen.

“I’ve never thought of myself as beautiful. In fact I’ve always suffered from the lowest self-esteem. Till recently, I’d look at my pictures and cringe. I still have the pictures from my first portfolio I got done in Chandigarh. They remind me of how ugly I can look. And to now play Madhubala in Once Upon A Time In Mumbai. How will I do it?”

Kangna is so petrified at the prospect that she has stopped looking into the mirror completely. She laughs when people tell her playing the traumatized mistress of the underworld don would be a cakewalk for her. “I’m proud of my so-called territory as an actress. If playing traumatized women is my territory then I’m glad. Because I know I’m good at it.”

The challenge in Once Upon A Time… is the physicality. “Madhubala’s role is not as tragic as my other roles. It’s basically a very tender romance between this really funny don (played by Ajay Devgan) and this female superstar who can’t understand his personality.

How will I manage to play the most beautiful woman that Indian cinema has ever seen? My characters have always had a dark and light side. And this one is no exception. But the challenge for me is to look almost ethereally beautiful, like Madhubala. How will I manage that?”

Kangna intends to undergo a complete transformation of look and appearance. She has already started watching DVDs of Madhubala’s films very carefully. “I won’t copy her. But I want to get into her mind and heart space.”

I will retire if my films get preachy: Deepa Mehta

Deepa Mehta might have a penchant for unconventional and often controversial themes, but the director says that she would retire as a filmmaker if her films start resembling message laden documentaries.

The Canada based director who is credited to be the first filmmaker to explore homosexuality in India through her film “Fire”, said that her motive is always to tell good stories.

“I make films out of stories that touch me. I hope my films don’t preach, otherwise I will retire. It is not very different from propaganda. Politicians can get away with it but filmmakers should not indulge in it,” Mehta said.

The director, whose latest offering “Videsh” explores domestic violence in a family of first generation migrants, said that the film was not a documentary on domestic violence.

“My film is not a kitchen sink drama about domestic violence. It explores a woman’s hidden power and how she overcomes the brutality of her situation by using mythology and imagination.

“It is so easy to label a film in a certain category but I feel it is the worst disservice that you can do to filmmakers as it limits their vision,” said Mehta.

The film, which released in India recently, stars Bollywood actress Priety Zinta in the lead. The critically acclaimed film was earlier released in the West as “Heaven on Earth”. Zinta won her?first international award at Chicago film festival for her portrayal of a woman trapped in an abusive relationship in an alien country.

The star known for her sartorial sense underwent a complete makeover to play the deglamourised Punjabi woman.

Mehta, who has woven stories from her own childhood into the screenplay of the film said that “Videsh” is different from other films made on the topic of domestic violence.

“It is not about revenge or redemption by killing the person who abused you. It is about how you keep your dignity intact. In the film, Chand’s mother tells her a story about a snake while she is still a young girl in Ludhiana. It is a story that my mother used to tell me. “It is an old folktale about a fakir and a snake.

The moral of the story being that you can protect yourself without harming anybody and that’s what ‘Videsh’ is all about,” said Mehta.

The director has also incorporated some elements from Girish Karnad’s play?”Nagamandala” into her film. Mehta, who discovered Nandita Das while looking for a female lead in “Fire”, has cast Bollywood stars like Priety Zinta and Akshay Kumar in her recent films.

When asked whether this was her attempt to widen her audience base in India, the filmmaker replied, “I always cast actors who are suitable for the role. But if I have the choice between a star and an unknown actor, both suitable for the role, I would tend to chose the star because it means a wider audience.”

Mehta, who is known for her film trilogy ‘Fire’, ‘Earth’ and ‘Water’, said that she is now focussing on individual stories.

“I think three is enough. I will focus on independent stories now,” said Mehta whose next project ?is a film based on the 1914 ‘Komagatamaru incident’ with Akshay Kumar in the lead.

Shilpa Shetty to marry Raj Kundra this year

Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty is all set to tie the knot with jewellery tycoon Raj Kundra later this year. The 33-year-old actress is planning a traditional wedding and has set a tentative date in October this year, the Daily Mail reported. The couple are yet to make an announcement about their marriage.

“I have very traditional views of marriage. I’ve seen my parents maintain a 35-year marriage and I really believe marriages are made in heaven,” the actress said.

“I’ve always said that the day I decide to tie the knot it is going to be for good. I have often wondered who the right person would be and I’ve come to realise that for me it is Raj. I’m completely sure he is my soul mate,” the Bollywood actress said about her two-year-old relationship with Kundra. The couple are planning a traditional wedding in India.

“I have spoken to Shilpa’s parents and we are doing it the Indian way. In India you don’t get engaged until just before the wedding, so I didn’t go down on one knee to her or anything like that. But we have definitely set a date for this year,” Kundra said.

It would be Shilpa’s first marriage while Kundra was previously married to Kavita and has a daughter with her.?

Shetty met Kundra in early 2007. The 34-year-old millionaire owns a Dubai-based business trading precious stones and metals. Kundra is also helping manage Shilpa’s career and is
said to be behind her decision to invest in Indian Premier League team Rajasthan Royals, the last year’s IPL winners.

The couple recently bought a seven-bedroom, 5 million pound house in Weybridge, Surrey in London. “I believe in the institution of marriage, I’m dying to have kids, and when you see the Weybridge home, it’s huge, it’s a great family home, so I can’t wait to bring up children there,” She had said in an earlier interview.?

Shetty became a household name in the UK after a racist storm in the “2007 Celebrity Big Brother,” involving late Jade Goody whom she credits for her success.??

Firaaq: Movie Review

firaq inidan movieDirector: Nandita Das
Cast: Shahana Goswami, Nowaz, Sanjay Suri, Tisca Chopra, Naseeruddin Shah, Raghuvir Yadav, Deepti Naval, Paresh Rawal

………………………………………………

Nandita Das arrests your attention right from the opening scene of her directorial debut that shows a disturbing mass burial. As a truck discards more dead bodies, the graveyard gives an impression of a dumping ground where corpses have replaced composite waste. The sight clearly befits the ruthless temperament of the 2002 Gujarat riots and its aftermath which the film attempts to explore.

………………………………………………………….

Friaq Movie Trailer

………………………………………………………….

[youtube vttxlJplLRo]
Firaaq is a fictional account on the repercussions of the dreadful communal riots of Gujarat in 2002. The story is set one month post the riots and unveils through multiple parallel narratives. Muneera (Shahana Goswami) is attempting to restore her life while trying to uncover faces who had set her house ablaze. A Gujarati housewife (Deepti Naval) is unable to overcome her guilt of closing the door on to a Muslim woman frantically seeking safety from a frenzied Hindu mob.

A contemporary Hindu-Muslim couple (Tisca Chopra – Sanjay Suri) decides to relocate from Gujarat, as the husband is terrified of acknowledging his true identity in the given circumstances. Much against the anxiety of his caretaker (Raghuvir Yadav), a devout musician (Naseeruddin Shah) remains optimistic about the state-of-affairs and his diminishing student count until his idealism is shaken. Meanwhile a child who has lost his family in the riots becomes witness to the city set on fire.

In terms of both its social subject and screenplay structure, the film instantly reminds of Nishikant Kamat’s Mumbai Meri Jaan . Like Kamat’s film, Firaaq too has its stories evolving post the riots and steers away from any political overtones making it work as a basic human drama at the common man level. However, the character conflicts and their conversion pale in comparison. The establishment of most characters is effective but somewhere marred by weak transformation or unsettled resolution of their conflicts.

The sudden despair in Naseeruddin Shah’s pious character post his perpetually positive outlook isn’t convincing. Sanjay Suri’s overnight acceptance of his true identity appears both hurried and unpersuasive. The concerns of his Muslim individuality in a Hindi dominated state is effectively brought out but the metamorphosis of his character isn’t credible. The Deepti Naval track denotes domestic violence over social unrest but is half-baked and concludes abruptly. Though Paresh Rawal as her dictating husband is a refreshing change from the comic stereotype, his character is not fleshed out and short-lived. Shahana’s track gets monotonous after a point with her repeated attempts to know the men who burnt her house. Her subplot seems incomplete.

Nandita Das still tries to end her film showing ray of hope as the Muslim musician strikes a chord with his two Hindu disciples. Also, Sanjay Suri comes to terms with his minority identity and shows courage to coexist amongst the majority community including his wife. The final frame that ends on the innocent face of the child who had been wandering the city is thought-provoking. It makes one wonder how the vulnerable young mind would shape up in future after witnessing so much violence. The outcome lingers on individual outlook, depending if one can bury the past or get ready for revenge.

The language credibly switches from Hindi, English, Gujarati to Urdu in individual episodes and the wordplay is particularly expressive in Sanjay Suri and Naseeruddin Shah’s chapters. The pacing is slow. The orphan child is a common link to merely two subplots but the movie could have been more fulfilling had he been mutual to all tracks, making the entire film a parable seen through his tiny eyes. The performances are of high order with each member of the cast delivering outstanding acts.

Firaaq (implying quest) isn’t flawless but is sensitive enough to end your search for a poignant human drama.
