Bigelow makes history as war drama wins Oscar

LOS ANGELES: Kathryn Bigelow became the first woman in the 82-year history of the Academy Awards to take the prize as her gritty Iraq War movie “The Hurt Locker” outshone “Avatar” after a nail-biting campaign season.

“The Hurt Locker” also took home the top prize, best picture, and four awards in other categories. “Avatar,” the 3D smash directed by Bigelow’s ex-husband, James Cameron, ended up with three awards, all in technical categories.

The acting races finished as expected and all four honorees took home the first statuettes of their careers.

Jeff Bridges won for his lead role as a drunken country singer who gets a shot at redemption in “Crazy Heart.” Sandra Bullock got the gold for playing a suburban mom who guides a homeless black teen to football stardom in “The Blind Side.”

In the supporting field, the prizes went to Austrian actor Christoph Waltz for the Nazi revenge fantasy “Inglourious Basterds,” and stand-up comic Mo’Nique for the dark urban drama “Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire.”

The biggest shocks were in the adapted screenplay and foreign-language film categories. Geoffrey Fletcher became the first African-American to win the writing prize, for his work on “Precious.” The prize had been expected to go to “Up in the Air,” a six-time nominee that was snubbed.

The Argentine crime drama “The Secret in their Eyes” (El secreto de sus ojos) beat Germany’s “The White Ribbon” (Das weisse Band) and France’s “A Prophet” (Un prophete) to claim the country’s second prize in the field.

BITTERSWEET VICTORY

In voting for “The Hurt Locker,” Hollywood insiders clearly showed a preference for a relatively obscure movie that suffered a similar commercial fate as other films revolving around the Iraq War.

With North American ticket sales of about $15 million — about half of what “Avatar” earned in its first day — “The Hurt Locker” is one of the least-commercial best-picture Oscar winners ever.

The film, based on a story by journalist Mark Boal, follows an American bomb-disposal squad in Iraq. Boal won an Oscar for his original screenplay, and was also a producer, along with Bigelow, Greg Shapiro and French financier Nicolas Chartier.

The best-picture win was a bittersweet moment for Chartier, who was banned from the ceremony last week after breaking Oscar campaign rules by sending out an e-mail to voters.

Bigelow, 58, shot the film in the Jordanian desert in the middle of summer almost three years ago on a shoestring budget of $15 million. It marked her first movie since the costly 2002 submarine flop “K19: The Widowmaker.”

Only three other women had ever been nominated for the directing Oscar, most recently Sofia Coppola for “Lost in Translation” in 2004.

As Bigelow left the stage clutching her statuette, the orchestra played Helen Reddy’s feminist anthem “I Am Woman.” But the shy horse-lover has bristled at the “female filmmaker” tag, and her works are often showcases for strong male roles.

Even Cameron had predicted he would lose the directing race to Bigelow, with whom he has remained on good terms after the couple split in the early 1990s. But he had hoped to repeat the best-picture success he had 12 years ago with “Titanic.”

The race for the top Oscar thus pitted two ex-lovers against each other, with each claiming their film was the underdog: “The Hurt Locker” for obvious commercial reasons, and “Avatar” because sentiment largely seemed stacked against it.

Even though “Avatar” has made history with $2.6 billion in worldwide ticket sales and showcased Cameron’s bold moviemaking skills, Oscar voters traditionally ignore science-fiction. “Avatar” also lost some major races to “The Hurt Locker.”

Another new consideration this time saw organizers double the best picture field to 10 for the first time since 1943. The move was designed to bring more crowd-pleasing blockbusters and thereby arrest the event’s steadily declining ratings.

The voting rules accordingly changed for best picture, with a preferential system that favored consensus choices over more-divisive contenders.

All the acting winners were first-time nominees, except for Bridges. The 60-year-old scion of a Hollywood acting family had been nominated four times previously, dating back to 1972. “Crazy Heart” also won the Oscar for best song.

Bullock, 45, ran a close race with Meryl Streep for “Julie & Julia.” It’s now been 27 years since 16-time nominee Streep won her second Oscar.

Waltz, 53, who played a Nazi with a twinkle in his eye, becomes the first actor to win an Oscar for a film directed by Quentin Tarantino.

Mo’Nique’s role as a abusive mother was a departure for the 42-year-old comedienne. But she has said she got into character after recalling the sexual abuse she suffered as a youngster.

The three-and-a-half-hour ceremony, hosted at the Kodak Theater by Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin, drew real-time brickbats from bloggers. Film critic Roger Ebert wrote, “I don’t remember when I’ve seen a less exciting Oscarcast.”

Jason Mesnick Ex Wife

Jason Mesnick Ex Wife, If you’re a fan of The Bachelor, then you’re probably hoping Jason Mesnick finds true love.  He’s a single dad to Ty, 3, and he announced in December, that he’s indeed engaged but of course he couldn’t reveal who the lucky lady is because the show’s season has just started.  However, there’s one website that has, what they believe, is ‘photo evidence’ of just exactly who Jason chose to be his bride!

Spoiler after the jump!

According to FORT (fans of reality TV – yes, I had no idea what FORT stood for), where fans are usually correct when they call a winner before it happens, claim to have proof of who Mesnick is engaged to.

The members of this site take their analizing very serious and have captured screen shots of the proposal, and gone over them with a fine-toothed comb.

Second warning: Spoiler below, stop now if you don’t want to know!

The photo below shows Jason holding the final rose ceremony winner’s hand (and hand has an engagement ring on it’s finger).  The woman’s arm has “unique moles” and they match up with one particular contestant.  Stop reading if you don’t want to know!

Molly and Jason s Wedding

Molly and Jason s Wedding, ABC has announced plans to air the wedding of The Bachelor’s Jason Mesnick and Molly Malaney in a two-hour special on March 8, hosted by Chris Harrison. Per the network, “The couple, who announced their engagement in October, will let viewers in on all the exciting festivities — from Molly’s dress fitting for her dazzling custom-made gown, to Jason and Molly planning the big day with their wedding planner and event designer. Then it’s on to their bachelor and bachelorette parties and the next stage of their romantic journey with a beautiful wedding ceremony in the perfect location. Past Bachelor and Bachelorette couples, stars and participants (to be announced at a later date) will be on the guest list to help the couple celebrate along with their family and friends.”

Reasons I would tune in for this (besides that fact that EW pays me to) include: Little kids in formal wear are adorable and Mesnick’s son, Ty, is no slouch; the only thing better than a good wedding is an over-the-top one, so here’s hoping Molly is as obsessed with pink as Trista was; and it’ll be fun to see if Ryan is still not comfortable in front of the camera in the obligatory “Where are Trista and Ryan now?

Britain’s Got Talent judge Piers, 44, wants to wed Celia Walden, 33, in July.

And if this happens Simon, 50, may have no choice but to rethink his marriage date with the Afghanistan-born make-up artist Mezhgan Hussainy, 36.

“Piers and Simon have lots of friends in common and both want to be at each other’s wedding,” the Daily Star quoted an insider, as saying.

The source added: “It’s a bit of a joke between them over who’s going to send out save the date cards first.”

Jordan ‘furious’ with Andre for gyrating with dancers in front of kids

Post image for Jordan ‘furious’ with Andre for gyrating with dancers in front of kids

Katie Price a.k.a. Jordan is furious with ex-husband Peter Andre for gyrating with lycra-clad dancers in front of their kids.

Andre, 37, who had put on an X-rated show with kids Junior and Princess just feet away, is said to have shocked fans as he performed with a string of sexy girls in kinky leather-look leggings.

Junior, four, and Princess, two, were in the front row of the raised seats at London’s IndigO2 Arena on March 6 alongside Andre’s TV chef pal Gino D’Acampo, 33, and his wife Jessica.

A confused-looking Junior was even seen waving to his dad as the show went on late into the night, with Princess appearing not to understand what was going on as she struggled to see over a screen.

A source close to Andre said that he had taken the kids along after Junior begged to see his show.

“The kids were there and had a brilliant time. They took their pyjamas and changed into them before they left the arena. They both loved it,” the Daily Star quoted his spokesman as saying.

But 31-year-old Jordan’s pals accused Andre of “double standards” after he had criticised her for similar stunts, and even labelled him a “hypocrite”.

“Kate is bound to be angry. Peter is always having a go at her for keeping the kids up late and taking them to inappropriate things,” Jordan’s friend said.

“But what could be more inappropriate than this? Letting your kids see you dance with a load of half-naked women is hardly in the parents’ handbook.

“They may know daddy is working but I’m not sure that kids of two and four know the difference.

“This is bound to be confusing for them and hardly something they should be going to,” the friend added.

Naomi Campbell planning humanitarian mission to Haiti

Post image for Naomi Campbell planning humanitarian mission to Haiti

Supermodel Naomi Campbell is said to be planning a humanitarian mission to Haiti in an effort to see where the money from her Fashion for Relief charity is being invested.

Campbell, 39, revealed she would be travelling to earthquake hit Haiti next month with White Ribbon, a philanthropic group founded by Sarah Brown, wife of British Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

“I will be there after Easter to confirm first-hand the work of White Ribbon with women and children, and especially with 37,000 pregnant women who are facing extreme risk situations,” the New York Daily News quoted her as telling Brazilian newspaper O Dia.

Her own humanitarian group, Fashion for Relief, has raised more than 1.5 million dollars to help women and children devastated by the January 12 earthquake in Haiti.

“I am not a humanitarian leader, but someone who wishes to improve the world in which we live,” she said.

“I want to see first hand where the money is being invested,” she added.

Director Bigelow Makes History With Hurt Locker

LOS ANGELES: Director Bigelow Makes History With Hurt Locker, Kathryn Bigelow made Oscar history Sunday night, becoming the first woman to win best director at the Academy Awards for her gritty Iraq war saga “The Hurt Locker.”

Bigelow’s film, which also won best picture, follows the dangerous daily existence of an Army bomb defusal team. It earned six Oscars, including one for Mark Boal’s original screenplay, based on his time as a journalist embedded with such a unit.

“There is no other way to describe it — it’s the moment of a lifetime,” Bigelow said, her voice quivering. She dedicated the award to the military men and women serving in Iraq, Afghanistan and around the world: “May they come home safe.”

Bigelow was the fourth woman nominated for the prize, following Sofia Coppola for 2003’s “Lost in Translation,” Jane Campion for 1993’s “The Piano” and Lina Wertmuller for 1975’s “Seven Beauties.” She was the front runner heading into the Academy Awards.

Barbra Streisand, director of films including “Yentl” and “The Prince of Tides,” walked out on stage to present the category.

“Well, the time has come,” Streisand said before announcing Bigelow’s win.

Bigelow also bested ex-husband James Cameron, who was up for directing the sci-fi blockbuster “Avatar” — and she’d been sitting directly in front of him all night during the Oscar ceremony. Much has been made about the former spouses competing against each other, but their split was amicable and the two since have supported each other professionally. As Bigelow’s victory was announced, Cameron could be seen clapping and saying, “Yes, yes.”

Backstage, reporters repeatedly tried to coax her to dish on her ex, but she was abidingly diplomatic.

“I think he’s an extraordinary filmmaker,” she said, when asked what it was like to beat him.

Bigelow had already been a pioneer for decades, having built a career making action pictures like “Point Break” and “K-19: The Widowmaker,” usually male-dominated territory. But at the Directors Guild of America Awards, where she won the top honor, Bigelow said: “I suppose I like to think of myself as a filmmaker” — not a female filmmaker.

The Hurt Locker wins big at Oscars

LOS ANGELES: “The Hurt Locker,” a little-seen war film with big backing from the critics, pushed past “Avatar” and other crowd-pleasers to win the best picture Oscar at a Sunday night ceremony here, while its director, Kathryn Bigelow, became the first woman to win the directing award.

“Avatar” and “The Hurt Locker” had come into the night as favorites, but the smaller film took the prize from the bigger in the end.

“There’s no other way to describe it, it’s the moment of a lifetime,” said Ms. Bigelow in accepting her award. It was presented by Barbra Streisand, who announced it with the words, “Well, the time has come.”

Mark Boal, a producer of “The Hurt Locker,” said of his modest expectations when the movie was shot back in 2007, “Hopefully, we would find a distributor and somebody might even like the movie.”

There was no mention of a last-minute embarrassment in which a fellow producer of the film, Nicolas Chartier, had been banned from the show for violating Oscar rules by urging academy members by e-mail messages to vote against a film assumed to be “Avatar,” which had the advantage of a vast budget and enormous popularity.

In a sense, the awards season had shaped up into a showdown between James Cameron, who directed “Avatar,” and Ms. Bigelow, who was previously married to Mr. Cameron.

Among other winners, Christoph Waltz took best supporting actor at the start of a sluggishly paced ceremony for his bilingual performance as a Jew-hunting Nazi officer in “Inglourious Basterds.” And also, as expected, Mo’Nique won for best supporting actress for her portrait of a terrifying mother in “Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire.”

With no excess of modesty, Mo’Nique thanked the academy’s members for showing that “it can be about the performance, not the politics.” The remark was a reference not just to her considerable talent, but to the fact that she had refused to spend time playing the usual Oscar campaign game. Backstage, she blamed the media for trying to stir up a controversy.

Jeff Bridges, a multiple nominee and now first-time winner, took best actor for his gritty portrayal of a broken-down country singer in “Crazy Heart.” A darling of the Hollywood crowd, Mr. Bridges had been seen as the designated winner almost from the moment Fox Searchlight made a last-minute decision to drop the low-budget movie into the Oscar race. “Thank you, Mom and Dad, for turning me on to such a groovy profession,” said the gray-bearded Mr. Bridges, who brought the crowd to its feet in a prolonged ovation as he whooped, hollered and showed obvious joy in the moment.

“Crazy Heart,” one of the evening’s smaller contenders, also took an Oscar for its theme song, “The Weary Kind,” by Ryan Bingham and T Bone Burnett.

Sandra Bullock, who had been pointed toward an Oscar since winning a bellwether Screen Actors Guild award, won best actress for her performance as a tough and loving contemporary Southern mother in “The Blind Side.” Like Mr. Bridges, she was clearly a favorite of those in the auditorium, though she had never been nominated before and had been best known for romantic comedies like “The Proposal” and the occasional action film, like “Speed.”

“Did I really earn this, or did I just wear you all down?” Ms. Bullock asked her cheering peers.

“Up in the Air” was shut out, although the movie, about a corporate operative who specializes in firing people, had propped up the long awards season with appearances at various prize ceremonies on both coasts and in England by George Clooney, its star, and Jason Reitman, the writer-director.

The show clocked in at a relatively long three hours and 32 minutes, but at times it felt longer than it actually was. That was mostly because the first half was loaded with clip samples and retrospectives, while the latter part moved along with the speed that one of its producers, Bill Mechanic, had promised in advance.

Before the bigger awards were announced, there was a trip back to “The Dark Knight,” as Morgan Freeman explained how sound editors handled a movie from an earlier year, and a lengthy string of excerpts from horror movies, in an effort to reach fans who do not find movies like the “Twilight” series on the show.

The pace had already slowed with the screening of highlights — and the introduction of two recipients, Roger Corman and Lauren Bacall — from an honorary-awards ceremony that had been moved off-camera to a November date, precisely to keep the show from slowing.

This came only a few minutes after a narrator took time to read chunks of script over clips from the best adapted screenplay nominees. But Geoffrey Fletcher, a first-time nominee who won for “Precious,” put some heart in the proceedings as he gasped and seemed to weep in accepting. “I thank everyone,” Mr. Fletcher said simply.

Going into the evening, Mr. Cameron’s 3-D blockbuster, “Avatar,” was expected to dominate the evening along with the smaller, intense film “The Hurt Locker.

Liang Zhi Qiang

Liang Zhi Qiang, Film-maker Liang zhi qiang’s secret affair with a young woman Zhong jia yan less than half his age was exposed on Friday after she showed up at his semi-detached home in Pasir Ris.

Miss Zhong jia yan, 22, was upset that Liang zhi qiang, 50, had apparently lied to her and demanded to see his wife on Friday.

Zhong jia yan said she had decided to make the affair public because she felt hurt and betrayed by Liang zhi qiang. She denied that she was using him to break into show business.

FANS of Liang zhi qiang are disappointed with the news of the local movie director’s extramarital affair, which made the front pages of all three Chinese papers yesterday.

Marketing and sales executive Vincent Chua, 55, who has watched many of his movies, said yesterday: ‘In his movies, he asks people to be good, honest and true to their families. But in real life, he can do anything. There is really a conflict.’

Industry watchers said the scandal may change the 50-year-old’s image and the way people view his movies.

News of the film-maker’s two-year affair with 22-year-old freelance model Zhong jia yan broke in the Lianhe Wanbao evening newspaper last Saturday. Chong told The Straits Times on Saturday night that it was she who had alerted the media to a meeting between Neo, his wife and herself at Crowne Plaza hotel in Changi airport on Friday.
