As we all know, the mark Michael Jackson has left in music is indelible. He has sold more than 750 million records worldwide. He is known all over the world and he is adored by everyone. However, in today’s climate, Michael Jackson just isn’t around. While we’ve seen other pop acts such as Prince and Madonna remaining in the public eye and a generation shift towards younger artists such as Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake. Can Michael make it back to that number one spot?
There’s no denying the fact that fans still love even the sight of Michael Jackson. Just this past week, he was able to sell 900,000 tickets for 50 shows in about an hour. What artist do you know that can pull that off? He can still get the people fainting for him just like he could at the height of his career. There’s also word that he’s in the studio working on his first album since 2001’s much maligned ‘Invincible.’ He’s working with some real high profile artists such as Akon, Kanye West, and Ne-Yo for this album, so that should be a major record whenever it is released. Fans still love Michael Jackson.
However, people fell in love with the Michael Jackson of yesteryear, the little kid with a big voice that led his band of brothers, The Jackson 5, to major success and then broke out on his own to reach the type of success nobody in the world has ever been able to amass. The Michael Jackson of today is now a guy we pity, someone you wish you could have frozen in time so you can prevent all of the bad things and negative press that he has had to endure for the better part of the last two decades. It’s almost as if we pretend it is still 1991 and we’re still anticipating the video for his monster hit ‘Black or White’ and we pretend the last 18 years just didn’t happen. While it’s refreshing to hear that Michael Jackson will be back on stage again, the fact that he’s basically doing this to pay off debts despite the billions of dollars he has generated over the course of his career is sad and sobering.
He does have a lot working for him though. First of all, he could get any artist in the world to work with him. All he’s got to do is put the word out that he wants to work with you. A studio session with the King of Pop is like winning the Golden Ticket in the movie ‘Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.’ Because he has influenced so many genres of music, he could go in any direction with his music, so creatively, he will not be at a loss for ideas. He has influence most if not all of the pop artists that currently dominate your airwaves and TV screens.
Now, here’s why Michael Jackson might not able to be dominant anymore. While he’s still wildly revered and adored, his sales of 2001’s ‘Invincible’ did not live up to the incredibly high expectations the public has of him. More than just sales, his public image has taken a beating ever since he allegedly molested a child in 1992, charges that were eventually settled out of court. He also had to fight a second child molestation case in 2005, a case he eventually won. Most would say that the damage has been done, though, as his bizarre behavior has been magnified more than his music has. 25 years ago, Michael Jackson couldn’t be stopped. Now, Michael Jackson is known as “Jacko” by the press and his nose has become the most newsworthy story about him.
I think Michael’s time at the top of the contemporary scene is done and over with. However, that doesn’t mean his impact won’t still be felt on the radio, at a live show, or when watching your favorite music video. He will be around in some way, shape, or form, even if he is close to calling it a career. The title ‘King of Pop’ will stick with him forever, even if someone else gets to sit on the throne for a little bit.
