The CN Wadia Gold Cup race day wore the traditional glamour but what made the day special was the decision of Maureen Wadia to honour the widows of Hemant Karkare, Ashok Kamte and Vijay Salaskar, whose bravery knew no boundaries when fighting the terrorists in November last year. And Maureen could not have chosen any better place in the heart of Mumbai city than the Mahalaxmi Race Course: The battle ground where noble steeds display their fighting spirit for the entertainment of all.

Two horses from the fairer sex, Oasis Star and Angelique, won the prime events of the day. Shapoor Mistry owned Oasis Star did no harm to her reputation when she shattered the course record for the six-furlong trip in SC Jain Sprinters’ Championship, which incidentally was her last appearance in the country. Angelique, who raced in liquor baron Vijay Mallya’s colours, gave a gritty performance when she stretched out magnificently to catch second favourite Yana in the shadow of the winning post.

Meanwhile, a unisex beauty pageant by the finalists of the Gladrags Mega Models and Manhunt contest as also a bevy of married ladies, who were vying for the recently concluded Gladrags Mrs India title, was squeezed between the two big races.
